Jonathan gives one the feeling that they have met another Ben Carson.Jonathan is aspiring to be a doctor and with his high grades in science oriented subjects, his dream is going to come true for him some day.
His academic performance is very impressive in spite of his circumstances. In the last two years of his school education, he has been in and out of class because of fees. Okiri Emmanuel John
Sex: Male
Age: 13 years
KCPE MARKS: 406 out of 500 (2009)
Emmanuel qualified as per CESF selection criteria as a destitute child. As per the child’s own handwritten application letter the father has been unemployed since 2007 and the mother is a nursery schoolteacher whose meagre income sustains them with food. The CESF official visited the home and found the family wanting. The coordinator spoke to the father at length and discovered that he had exhausted all means of taking the child to school. It was a sad case since the boy had excelled in his examination scoring 406 out of 500 marks. Emmanuel is well disciplined and he is a responsible boy for his age.
The coordinator visited his previous school Ganjoni Primary School and talked to his teachers who pleaded for his case saying that Emmanuel was among their very best students and should be encouraged in pursuing his academic ambitions. The teachers at the previous primary school attended by Emmanuel further encouraged the coordinator by revealing that they had come up as a school to provide the items that Emmanuel MUST report to Maseno High school with. This was encouraging news to CESF to realize that the community is also coming together to help Emmanuel continue with his education in spite of the current financial difficulties faced by the family.
On receiving the scholarship Emmanuel could not contain his excitement and found himself hugging the CESF official but his father’s expression was different. His father was so moved he had tears in his eyes. He had given up hope that his son would go to that school and CESF was a miracle. “At this particular moment I was so proud to be a part of CESF,” admits the local CESF representative in Mombasa. The CESF coordinator paid the amount stipulated in the fee structure for term one 2010 - the amount of 23,100Ksh (A$334). The scholarship recipient’s father was handed a copy of the bank slip, and later presented the CESF official with a receipt of the same amount after presenting the bank slip to the school Bursar.
In this case the CESF coordinator did not take the child to school since the father was able to do that. This also saved CESF travelling costs.Emmanuel promises to be a worthwhile recipient of the CESF scholarship and this is what the organization aspires to: to reach and help the most potential members of the community.“I felt good to be a part of this child’s success and that is what CESF is all about,” says Maimuna, the CESF coordinator in Mombasa. |
